ICF bracing setup
Proper ICF bracing setup is what keeps a concrete wall plumb, level and safe on pour day. ACE SCAFFOLD turnbuckle ICF bracing gives installers a fast, adjustable system for aligning straight runs, corners and openings. The following steps walk through a typical on-site setup from the first courses to the final pre-pour check.
Step 1 — Stack and align the first courses
Stack the ICF forms to the height where bracing begins — usually the third course — and keep the wall straight and level as you go. Check the corners first; everything else is referenced from them. Snap a chalk line on the footing so the base of the wall stays consistent along the run.
Step 2 — Attach the strongback
Place a steel or aluminum strongback against the outside face of the wall, aligned with the form furring strips. Fasten it with the screw size and pattern specified by the system (commonly #10 or #12), set in the middle of the slot and snug but not tight so the wall can still be adjusted. Use 8-, 10- or 12-foot strongbacks to match the wall length and plank span.
Step 3 — Position the footplate and diagonal brace
Run the telescopic brace diagonally from the platform bracket down to a footplate secured firmly to the ground. The heavy-duty threaded shaft lets you push or pull the wall to plumb, and it can still be fine-tuned after the concrete is in. Keep the thread protected from splatter so it stays adjustable.
Step 4 — Set the string line and tune for plumb
Stretch a string line between the top of the corner strongbacks, then adjust each remaining brace until it just touches the line. Many crews intentionally set the wall about 1/4 inch inside-of-plumb, because ICF walls tend to drift outward as they are filled. Re-check the line while the concrete is still wet and correct any movement.
Step 5 — Brace corners, openings and intersections
Place extra braces at every corner, T-intersection and window or door opening, where concrete pressure is highest. L-shaped strongbacks simplify corners by replacing two separate braces with one. Spacing between braces on a straight run is normally no more than 5–6 feet regardless of ICF brand.
Step 6 — Final check before the pour
Before the pump arrives, walk the wall and confirm every strongback touches the string, every footplate is anchored, and the platform brackets are locked with handrails in place. A 1,500 sq. ft. basement typically needs around 32 braces; add more for large windows or many corners. With the setup verified, the pour can proceed safely and the walls will cure straight.
